Chapters 38 & 39

Chapter 38 Heart To Hearts

Mac knocks on Evan and Emily's door and smiles at Evan when he answers. "Hey... I was in the neighborhood, thought I'd just stop by."
Evan throws his head back and laughs. "You're always in the neighborhood, you work downstairs. Come on in."
Mac follows him into the apartment and takes a seat on the couch. "Is Emily around?"
Evan shakes his head. "No, she went out for a little while. Is there something you wanted to discuss?"
Mac looks at him sheepishly. "You figured me out."
Evan sits in the chair across from him. "You seldom look so serious. What's up?"
Mac sighs and looks around the apartment. "I like what you've done with the place. Miranda never really decorated."
Evan looks at Mac curiously. "You came all this way to discuss decorating? You should wait for Emily then, she is the one who fixed it up. What's really going on?"
Mac grins. "Okay, well I was wondering if you were up to a heart to heart with your old man? I talked to your mom a little while back and she mentioned something that puzzled me."
Evan:"Sure, we can talk. What has you puzzled?"
Mac: "Well, I was just wondering if it was okay spending so much time with Emily?"
Evan looks at him doubtfully. "Excuse me?"
Mac sighs. "This is coming out all wrong. Evan, I know about Michelle."
A look of horror crosses over Evan's face at the mention of Michelle. "You know nothing about her. This conversation is over."
Mac shakes his head. "It hasn't even started. Look, your mom is concerned, and after talking with her, so am I. I saw a picture of Michelle, and the resemblance to Emily is uncanny. Does Emily know that? "
Evan looks out the window. "I don't want to talk about this anymore. It was a long time ago and has nothing to do with Emily. You have a lot of gall to bring this up to me. You don't even know who I am."
Mac nods. "That's true, I don't really know you that well, but you are my son and I love you. I want to help, but unless you talk to me I can't."
Evan looks at him angrily. "Help me? You weren't even around! My mother didn't tell you about me because you were too busy being a freelance... what do you call it?? Oh, a mercenary. Whatever! You lived too dangerous of a life to be included in my childhood, and now suddenly I'm supposed to call you dad? I'm supposed to bear my soul and let you help me? This was a mistake! I never should have looked you up! My mother always had great judgment and obviously keeping me away from you was an example of that!"
Mac stands up and faces his seething son. "That is not fair and you know it! I never had a chance to be a part of your life! I would have been there if I had known; I would have taken care of you! You are holding me responsible for something I had no control over!"
The shouting men don't notice a shocked Emily enter the room. Evan pushes Mac angrily. "Get out of my face! I don't need this from you or anyone else!"
Mac is shocked at his reaction but stands his ground. "You need help, Evan. Emily might look just like Michelle, but she's not, she's Emily. If you are trying to replace Michelle, then you need help."
Emily stands at the doorway, watching them numbly. She tries to digest Mac's statement. Evan stands angrily facing his father and fights the urge strike him. He turns to the nearby wall and punches it. When he looks up he notices Emily looking at him frightened. "Emily.."
He moves towards her but takes off out of the apartment instead. Emily stands in the doorway silently. Mac rushes past her calling after Evan. He returns a moment later looking worried. Emily wordlessly takes a seat on the couch and looks up at Mac. "What happened? How much do I look like her?"
Mac pulls out a photo and hands it to her. Emily looks at the picture of the smiling brunette standing next to a laughing, younger Evan. Everything was the same, but her eyes were different. A ton of emotions begin to topple over Emily as everything begins to fall into place. "His mother was shocked to see me. She never said anything, but I couldn't help but think she saw something frightening. He told me about Michelle, but no real details. Last night he had a dream, a nightmare really, that I was gone...." Emily jumps off the couch to leave. "I have to go to him!"
Mac stops her. "Emily, that isn't the good idea right now."
She pulls away from him. "I promised him I would always be there. He needs me and I won't let him down! Trust me Mac, I can handle this."
Emily rushes out of apartment. Mac picks up the phone and dials a number. "Kevin, it's me. I need you, Buddy."
Kevin looks up from his painting. "What's going on?"
Mac sighs and explains everything to him. "Anyway, she ran out of here to help him. He's in a bad frame of mind right now."
Kevin nods. "He thinks his entire world has just crashed on top of him. Mac. I think it would be dangerous for Emily to try to help him on her own. One of them could get hurt even if he doesn't mean for anything to happen. Can you think of where he might have gone?"
Mac shakes his head unhappily. "Damn! I don't. I guess I should comb the streets."
Kevin grabs his coat as he says, "I'll meet you in front of the Outback in 5 minutes. I'll help you look for him."
Mac sighs with relief. "Thanks, mate. I appreciate that."
Emily pulls her car up to the bridge next to Evan's. She can see him standing on the ledge of the bridge with the rain beating down on him. She runs to him yelling his name. "EVAN!!"
Evan watches the water flow gently below him. It ripples as the rain falls into it. His tears are blended with the water from the storm and he seems lost in his own thoughts.
Emily reaches the bridge. "EVAN! Please, come down! I want to talk to you."
Evan moves a little closer to the edge. He doesn't answer her as he closes his eyes to try and stop the tears. His bangs fall over his eyes, and he wipes them away as he remembers the night of Michelle's death.
Emily is frantic as she watches him standing there, near the edge and unresponsive to her pleas. "Evan, I need you. You promised me that If I needed you that you'd come to me."
Evan speaks to her, but doesn't face her. "Words Emily. I can't help you, I couldn't help her and I can't even help myself. Leave me Emily, leave here."
Emily pleads. "I won't leave you! I made you that promise and I meant it. We can get through this. I just need you to talk to me. I need to understand so I can help you."
Evan becomes unresponsive again and Emily moves away from the bridge. She cries as she dials Lucky's club using her cell phone. "Lucky! I need you! Please just come! I'm at the bridge."
Emily puts her phone into her jacket pocket and returns to Evan. He has his arms outstretched and is swaying back and forth. "Evan! Please you're going to hurt yourself!"
Evan laughs as the rain falls over his face. "Did you ever catch raindrops with your tongue? My Uncle and I used to stand on our porch on the ranch and catch the rain."
Emily clutches onto the statement in an attempt to keep him talking. "I used to catch snow flakes with my mom. Tell me about your Uncle."
Evan sighs. "I asked you to leave, Emily. I don't want you to get so wet. Go now, I'm okay."
Emily shakes her head. "I like the rain and I'm not leaving you. Evan, what happened? Why are you holding yourself responsible for Michelle's death?"
Evan finally turns and faces her, the heels of his boots at the edge of the ledge. "I killed her Em, she was my angel. You never met her, but you two could be twins. Not just your appearances, but your hearts are the same. She loved me for me just like you do.. or did. I won't blame you for hating me, Em."
He watches Lucky's Cadillac appear and looks at her in disbelief. "You called HIM?"
Emily nods. "He can help. I trust him. Evan, just come down and let us help you."
Lucky approaches cautiously. "Hey Em, Evan. What's going on here?"
Evan looks at him angrily. "Leave here and take her with you."
Lucky shakes his head. "I can't do that man. You aren't the one who invited me."
Emily looks at Evan pleadingly. "Please, Evan, come down."
Evan retreats back into himself slightly. "We were fighting in our apartment. She thought I had cheated on her. I kept telling her it wasn't what she thought, but Shelly was stubborn. She grabbed her surfboard and headed for the beach. I didn't go after her, I figured she just needed time to cool off. A half hour later it began to pour down. Lightning made the sky look like it had fireworks in it. I ran out to the beach, but I didn't see her. I kept calling for her, but no answer. I ran down the beach looking for her and finally I spotted her surfboard. I ran into the water and she was just laying there. I tried to resuscitate her! I don't know how much time passed, I just kept trying to revive her. The next thing I knew a lifeguard pulled me away saying it was too late. It was too late..."
Lucky and Emily watch Evan sob as he looks over the water. Emily is the first to speak. "You tried to save her life. Baby, it was an accident. I can't believe she would hold you responsible for this. I know I don't."
Evan turns to her angrily. "It was because if me that she left the apartment! I angered her! I killed her!"
Lucky jumps up on the ledge. "Come on man, let's not do this. I want to go back down there, but I'm not budging till you do."
Emily screams. "Lucky! Get down! Both of you get down!"
Evan looks at Lucky incredulously. "What are you trying to prove?"
Lucky looks down at the water below and sighs. "I don't man, but that's a long way down. How about we discuss it down there with Em?"
The rain begins to beat harder and Evan jumps down to where Emily is. "Get off the ledge, Lucky!"
Lucky smiles. "With pleasure." As he turns to jump down he loses his footing and slips. Evan and Emily watch in horror as he falls over the edge. Evan jumps over to where Lucky fell and grabs his hand. "Hang on!"
Lucky tries to reach for Evan's other hand without much success. "Hang on? You're joking right?"
Evan leans further over the ledge and grabs onto Lucky's other hand. He begins to pull him up slowly. Emily sobs, grabbing Evan's legs to steady him as he pulls Lucky to safety.. Lucky sits on the bridge breathlessly and Evan falls down beside him. He turns to Lucky. "I'm sorry.... I nearly got you killed."
Lucky shakes his head. "No way man. It's not your fault. It's Emily's."
Emily and Evan looks at him in shock. Lucky remains serious as he tries to catch his breath. "Yeah, man, she called me out here. I'd never have been here if she didn't call."
Evan looks at him angrily. "Stop it! She's been through enough! Just because she called you doesn't mean it's her fault. It was an accident."
Lucky nods. "True, and the same holds true for you man. You argue with your girlfriend, she goes off surfing and drowns. So you're going to beat yourself up for it? If you hadn't grabbed me and I took a header, would Emily be right to blame herself? It was an accident."
Evan lets Lucky's words sink in and turns to Emily. "Baby..oh God, I'm sorry."
Emily falls to her knees beside him and holds him. "We'll get through it. You just have to deal with the loss, I can help you."
Lucky stands up and brushes himself off. Wordlessly he walks towards his car. Emily pulls away from Evan. "I need to thank him. I'll be right back."
Evan nods and watches her run off. He takes the necklace from his neck and opens the locket. Inside is a picture of Michelle. He kisses the locket and then tosses it over the side of the bridge. "Goodbye Angel."

Emily reaches the Cadillac and looks at Lucky. "Get out for a sec. I owe you something."
Lucky smiles and gets out of the car. He holds open his arms for a hug and is shocked when she slaps him across his face. "What the hell?"
Emily looks up at him. "Accident my ass, you jumped off that bridge to prove a point! Damn it Lucky you could have been killed."
Lucky shakes his head. "He wasn't going to let me fall, Em. It worked out, he realizes it's time to get over the grief."
Emily hugs him tightly. "You're the best! Always there when I need you! I better get back to Evan. Thanks Lucky."
Lucky stops her for a moment. "You love him don't you? I mean really love him."
She smiles. "Yeah, I do. I knew I did before, but what happened out here tonight just proved it. I will stand beside him no matter what. Take care of yourself."
She rushes back to Evan and Lucky sags behind the wheel of his car. "I love you, Em." He starts the engine and pulls off. He can see Evan holding Emily on the bridge as he drives away.
.........................

Matt Clark dials a number from the pay phone. "Look, Mrs. Scorpio, just listen..I know whose responsible for all the murders..It wasn't supposed to be Amy..it was supposed to be Carly.. Go to this address..and hurry, I don't know who's next.."

Chapter 39 When All Hell Breaks Loose...

Garcia watches as Matt Clark's body is brought from the cell. He turns
to Keesha, "How did he get the blanket to hang himself?"
Keesha pats her husbands shoulder. "I don't know. You better start
interviewing your staff. Who found him?"
Garcia: " Taggert. He went off on the junior officers for slacking off in their duties. The press is going to have a field day with this."

Mac and Filly head to the location Matt gave them. Felicia is driving
and looks over at Mac. "Kevin said he'd call after he talked to Evan.
I'm sure he's fine."
Mac sighs. "Slow down will ya. We're going to end up in jail again. I know Evan will be okay. I guess you were right, I shouldn't have approached the subject yet."
Felicia sighs. "No, you did the right thing. Hey he argued with you, kids do that with their parents. Consider it a good thing. You're making progress.. what the hell?"
Mac looks at her then at the road..a Green sports car rams them and their car begins to spin finally landing in a ditch. Mac weakly looks at Felicia who is unconscious. He squeezes her hand and then closes his eyes.

Evan and Emily arrive at the apartment and Kevin smiles at them. "Mac asked me to drop by."
Evan looks at Emily who nods.
Emily smiles. "I'm going to jump in the shower. Later."
Kevin:"She's not obvious, is she?"
Evan smiles and takes a seat next to Kevin. "She doesn't have to be. I guess Mac filled you in on everything."
Kevin shrugs his shoulders. "Why don't you tell me what's going on? Whatever you say to me is confidential."
Evan leans back into the couch. "Won't this be weird for you? I mean you're my father's best friend."
Kevin nods. "Indeed I am. I'm also your counselor if you choose to talk to me. I know where you're coming from, I've tried to bury my grief too. It always comes back to haunt us, one way or another."
Evan nods. "I see that now. I don't know if the damage I caused can be
repaired. I feel like I've let everyone down. I said cruel things to my dad, and I put Emily through hell tonight."
Kevin:"Our loved ones are quicker to forgive us than we are to forgive ourselves. What started the chain of events that ended up as the situation tonight?"
Evan laughs. "Situation? You mean what caused all hell to break loose tonight? I'm not sure really. I suppose it got worse when I lost Michelle, but I think it started when My Uncle died."
Kevin nods. "Did you not deal with his death?"
Evan shrugs his shoulders. "I don't know what happened. I turned to Michelle to help me through it. He was the closest thing I had to a dad, you know. I was devastated when he was gone. Then losing Michelle, well I guess you could say I went nuts."
Kevin:"What would you say?"
Evan sighs. "I hate that about shrinks..they always turn the question around."
Kevin laughs. "You'll get used to it. Let's back up, tell me about your uncle."

Alexis answers the penthouse door to Taggert. "Can I help you?"
Taggert smiles coyly. "Just a few questions about Scott Baldwin. Do you
mind?"
Alexis allows him in. "Tom isn't here, he'd be the one to ask."
Taggert smiles. "Who is here? Just you and the Sonny Jr.?"
Alexis looks up at him annoyed. "Look, I'm not in the mood to here about your problems with my previous husband. I think it would be best it you came back when Tom was here to answer your questions."
Taggert turns to walk out. "Oh, one more thing.." He turns back around with a gun facing her. "I think we'll discuss Sonny today. He's the reason for everything."
Alexis looks at the gun fearfully. "What are you doing? I'm calling the police."
Taggert gloats. "I am the police and your phone lines are down. Never understood why a smart woman as yourself would hook up with a low life like Rico Suave. Then, to further prove you bad taste in mates, you hook up with Hardy. Pity about him. He'll be having a car accident tonight. See, he's going to hear that his wife and stepson were tragically killed by a mob hit. In his panic he's going to run off the road. Kinda like Mac and Felicia Scorpio did a little earlier today when they were on their way to my place."
Alexis shakes her head. "What are you talking about? What have you done?"
Taggert laughs. "I've finally gotten vengeance..for Deke and for myself. Sonny and Tom worked together to make sure I never rose above detective.
Garcia succeeded the inept Mac Scorpio instead! That was my job! But,
Sonny went crying about harassment and Tom helped him out. Well, now it's time I cleaned up the mess Sonny boy made. See, I took out the Baldwins to help frame Matty Boy. It helped that Lee Baldwin was the one
who tried the case on me. Then, you see I made a mistake, It wasn't supposed to be Amy Vining..It was supposed to be that tramp Carly. She
saw Matt and me talking in the hospital and him hand me the pills I
requested. Killed two birds with one stone. Speaking of Stones where is
Sonny Jr.?"
Alexis looks at him fearfully. "He's asleep, please do what you want to me, but not my baby."
Taggert backhands her with the gun. "Shut up! See, those pills allowed me to knock off the little Mob Whore, Brenda. You were probably happy she was taken care of. You despised her as much as I did. You should really thank me for that. Matt had to be taken care of because he got scared. He realized I had him for all of the crimes, and he placed a call to the Scorpios. Naturally, I had to stop them. Now, before I take care of you...I'll share with you what happens next. The New Mr. and Mrs. Morgan are going to have yet another drive by Mob hit. Pity these things happen. You already know what's going to happen to Tom. So, now that you've been filled in you really don't need to be around to see it happen.."
Taggert aims the gun. As he's about to pull the trigger, Mr. Landers appears holding a gun on him. "Drop it."
Taggert smiles and quickly fires the gun twice at Landers who falls to the ground. Alexis screams and then watches Taggert fall to his knees as blood spurts from his side and his mouth. She looks towards the doorway
and see's Mrs. Landers holding a pistol. Mrs. Landers runs to her husband and places his head in her lap. "GEORGE!!"
George looks up at his wife, and weakly whispers. "You're the best thing
that ever happened to me baby."
She whispers back to him as her tears fall over his face. "Ditto" He lays lifeless in her arms and she rocks with him in her arms. "Nooo..No George, Oh please no."
Alexis falls to her knees beside her after locking Stone in his room. She holds Mrs. Lander's hand and calls 911 on her cell phone. "This is Alexis Hardy, send an ambulance quickly. We have two injured people here, both appear to be dead. I need the police!"
She drops her cell phone and wraps her arms around the weeping Mrs.
Landers. "I'm sorry.. Oh my God, I'm so sorry...."

At the hospital, Evan, Emily and Kevin rush into the ER. Evan grabs Carly. "MY dad and Felicia? Where are they?"
Carly takes his hand and states firmly. "Calm yourself. They are in the ER, it doesn't appear anything is seriously wrong with them. Bruises and minor concussions. We'll keep them for observation over night, but they're really lucky."
Evan nods and removes his hand. " What happened?"
Tony Jones and Bobbie walk over to them. "Hello Evan, Kevin, Emily. Okay, someone ran them off the road. Not sure who yet. The good news is they are going to be just fine. There's no internal bleeding, no broken bones. I've no idea how they survived such a crash as intact as they are."
Bobbie smiles. "I'm sure they'll want to see you soon. I'm going to call Maxie and have her bring Georgie here."
Emily interrupts. "I'll go get them. Trust me, no matter how fine you tell them their parents are, they'll drive here in a rush and another accident might happen."
Bobbie nods. "That's an even better idea. Come with me."
Evan and Kevin turn to Tony. Kevin:"You said there was bad news?"
Tony laughs. "Well, they're insisting on a room together. From the way
they've already been bickering that won't be easy on the nurses."
Kevin laughs and Evan looks towards the ER. "Can I see my father?"
Tony nods."He's in the first sectioned off bed."

Evan heads towards the room and approaches his father's bedside. Mac
appears to be sleeping and Evan takes his hand. "Dad? Dad, I'm here."
Mac opens his eyes and squeezes Evan's hand. "You called me dad."
Evan nods. "You are my dad right? I'm sorry about the things I said to you. I was losing my cool and I took it out on you. You had every right to bring up Michelle."
Mac smiles. "Are you okay?"
Evan:"You're the one in the hospital bed. Yes, I'm fine. How are you? And how's Felicia?"
Felicia pulls open the curtain and wipes her eyes. "I'm fine, Evan. He's fine too, been moaning and groaning since we got here."
Mac looks at her irritated. "You were driving too fast. You would've been able to stop if you hadn't been going so fast."
Felicia rolls her eyes. "I was not driving that fast. You wouldn't have been able to stop us from flipping over bucko! It was my expert driving that saved us."
They continue to banter and Evan laughs. "You're right, you're both fine. I'll stay with the girls tonight and if you give me Robin's number I'll call her."
Felicia writes down the number. "Maxie, Georgie and Robin are going to be frantic."
Evan kisses her cheek gently. "I'll handle it. Okay, as you were. I'll be back in a few."
He turns and walks out laughing as they go back to their driving argument.

Alexis and Mrs. Landers rush into the ER with EMTs. Mrs. Landers is escorted off by Carly to fill out some paperwork and Tom takes Alexis
into his arms. "I'm sorry, honey. I'm so sorry."
Alexis cries softly."Mac and Felicia?"
Tom looks at her questioning. "How did you know about them?"
She shakes her head. "Taggert, he did them too. He was trying to get
vengeance on you and Sonny and he hurt people. It's crazy."
Evan overhears and approaches. He angrily states. "Where is Taggert?"
Alexis looks up at him. "Dead, your parents?"
Evan: "They're going to be fine. I'm going to call Robin now."
Alexis nods. "Try and convince her to stay on her honeymoon. She shouldn't have to deal with this now. I'll go with you. I need to talk to Jason."
They leave together and Tom stands there shaking his head.
