First Date

By LexiCass

Author's Note: This was inspired by Anna’s fic, where she paired Mac with Alexis. It wasn’t until I started reading that fic, that I could see them as a couple. This story happens a few months after the Ned and Alexis’ non-wedding.

“Hi, Mac,” Alexis said entering his office. “You said you wanted to speak with me.”

Mac put down his paper and looked towards the door. “Alexis, yeah, um…”

“Is there a problem with one of my clients?” Mac scratched the back of his head and looked down. He was unsure of how to proceed. “Please tell me it isn’t Zander,” she begged.

“It’s not Zander,” he promised.

“Great… What did Sonny do now?”

“Actually… I was wondering if… you know… you’d like to, maybe, go out this Friday.”

“Oh, um…” Alexis was shocked by his answer. The last thing she had expected was to be asked on a date by the police commissioner.

“Look, I know it’s only been a few months since you and Ned broke up. So if you don’t want to go…”

“Yeah,” she said answered.

“It’s okay. It was just a thought.” Mac sat down at his desk and picked up the paper that he had been reading when she entered.

“Mac…” She waited for him to look up at her. “What might Friday entail?”

“Dinner and dancing,” he said almost questioningly.

“So, it’d be a date?”

“Sounds like a date to me.”

Alexis took a deep breath. “It’s been a while since I went on a date.”

“I’ll pick you up at seven?”

“Sounds good,” Alexis said before leaving his office.

Mac smiled wide. He had had a crush on her since she arrived in town, and it had grown over the past several years. He was probably the only person in town thrilled when she left Ned at the altar. He had waited several months to ask her out. He was afraid of asking too soon, but also afraid of missing his chance. And when he finally found the nerve to ask her, she had given him to answer he had desired.

“Can Friday get here any slower?” he said trying to concentrate on his work

Alexis zipped up a blue dress and turned to look at herself in the mirror. She rolled her eyes and went back into her closet. The first seven dresses I tried on were awful, and the ones I have left are worse. She continued to rummage through her closet. Her mouth dropped open when she found a light purple dress, with a silvery, metallic shimmer to it.

She replaced the blue dress with the purple one, and looked into the mirror once again. She smiled. “This is the one,” she said to herself. It was low in the front, and even lower in the back. The fabric hugged her curves perfectly. It looked as if it were made for her. She had bought the dress months prior, but since her break-up with Ned, she hadn’t had a chance to show it off.

After fixing her hair, and touching up her make-up, she looked at the clock. She finished getting ready, with time to spare. Alexis made her way out into the living room and clasped her necklace at the back of her neck. The doorbell rang. Mac stood on the other side transfixed at the sight of her.

“You look… amazing.”

“Thanks. You look good, too.”

“I, uh… brought you these,” he said handing her the bouquet of roses. “I didn’t know what color to get you, so…”

“Yellow roses are my favorite.”

“You’re just saying that.”

“No… they really are.”

Alexis placed the roses in a vase of water on her desk in the living room. She played with them a little, arranging them until they looked just right to her eyes.

“Shall we?” Mac asked lending his arm to Alexis. She smiled and wrapped her arm in his.

They sat together at the Port Charles Grille eating and making light conversation.

“So…”

“So… I didn’t think it would be this awkward.”

“Neither did I. Maybe if we just stay away from work related topics?”

“That’s probably best. I would hate to see you get fired for divulging too much of Sonny’s secrets.”

“I don’t know anything about anything,” she assured him.

They both took a few more bites unsure of what to say. Ned entered the restaurant and sat down at the bar.

“He’s glaring at me,” Mac said.

“He’ll get over it.”

“I take it you didn’t inform him of our date?”

“Did you tell Felicia?”

“We broke up months ago. It’s none of her business.” Alexis simply raised her eyebrow. “I see your point.”

“He’s not the only one staring,” she commented.

“How much do you wanna bet that Jason won’t run back to the penthouse to inform his boss you were seen cavorting with the police commissioner?”

“This is cavorting?”

“Would you care to dance?” Mac asked.

“Give them a real show?” Alexis asked. “Why not?”

She threw her napkin on the table and allowed Mac to lead her to the dance floor. He pulled her in close, allowing his hand to rest on her bare, lower back. Ned cringed watching the display before storming out of the room. Mac barely noticed as he was too swept up in Alexis. He breathed deeply, inhaling her scent.

They swayed slowly to the music, and when it stopped, their foreheads rested together. She pulled back and looked into her eyes. No one had ever looked at her with such compassion and desire. She suddenly felt like she was where she belonged. Her lips touched his gently, as he framed her face with his hands. He pulled and wiped away the tear that fell down her right cheek.

“I think I’m ready to go home now,” she whispered.

“Let’s get out of here.”

Alexis woke up the next morning to find she was not alone. She smiled reveling in the memories of the night before. Turning her head, she found Mac watching her.

“Are you okay?” he whispered.

“More than okay. No one has ever made me feel like that.”

Mac brushed her bangs out of her eyes. “I hope that means you don’t regret what happened last night.”

“My only regret is that I didn’t find you earlier.”

“At least you found me.”

“I think you found me,” she countered before pulling him into a deep kiss.

“I’m so glad it’s a non-work day,” he said grinning.

Mac pulled her to him, and they continued their gentle exploration of one another.
